I first saw this Spaniard's work a few years ago, and I was immediately struck by his deft brushwork and his almost magical ability to transform the two- dimentional application of oil on board into three-dimentional illusions of human flesh pulsating with life. His subjects float in an ethereal world of tranquilty and timelessness. When you stand close to one of his paintings, you almost feel as though you could touch the warm flesh of the model and gently rouse her from her dream like state....simply gorgeous nudes.
When I first saw a painting by this American born master some 20 years ago, I almost felt flush. Never had a work moved me like that. His brushwork seems loose, even wild at times.....but with every movement of his brush, he does what few painters have ever been able to do.......capture a momentary frame of an individual's life. When primitive people speek of fearing a camera, it is because they think the photographer is stealing their soul. But they are wrong....for that role belongs to painters like this! He steals his subject's soul and transfers it to a canvas, bound by time and a frame hanging on a wall. I have been fortunate in my 25 years to have had my hands on a few dozen of these works. What a privilege.
